Scope
What a GTM Strategist actually owns
The question this role exists to answer: Given what the market and our own data are telling us, which accounts do we go after, with what message, through which motion, and how will we know it is working.
Owns
- ICP definition and positioning
- Signal orchestration, meaning which signals trigger which plays
- Campaign architecture across outbound, ABM and inbound
- Revenue forecasting inputs from the GTM side
- Attribution and reporting that leadership uses to decide
- Evaluation of the GTM stack against the strategy
Shares
Does not own
- Building the automation and integrations
- Running campaigns day to day
- Carrying a quota
- Company level strategy and the board narrative
Timing
When to hire a GTM Strategist
Too early
Below roughly $2 million in ARR the founder is the strategist, because the ICP is still being discovered in conversations only a founder is having.
The right window
$5 million to $40 million in ARR, once there are several motions running and no one owns how they fit together.
Outgrown
Past roughly $75 million in ARR the work is usually absorbed into a strategy and operations function reporting to the CRO or CMO.
How much work this actually is
At Series B, with none of it covered today, the functions in this role’s scope represent roughly 1.2 full time equivalents. One hire covers this.

|---|---|---|
| Positioning and messaging Value proposition, message hierarchy, proof architecture, and the words the whole company uses. |

| ICP definition and market research Who the buyer is, what triggers a purchase, TAM and segmentation work. |

Compensation
What a GTM Strategist costs
Salary bands as of October 2026.
Structure matters as much as the number
A modest bonus tied to company or function performance. The role is not commission driven.
Equity: Typically 0.15% to 0.5% at Series B, with a bonus tied to company or pipeline targets.
These bands are specific to cybersecurity go-to-market roles, not general B2B SaaS. Security pays above the cross industry midpoint: the buyer is technical, the cycle is longer, and the pool with real security context is small. Figures are directional, for scoping a description or a target range rather than making or accepting an offer. Live posted ranges come from GTM Radar and appear once enough matched postings exist to be meaningful.
Title confusion
Titles a GTM Strategist gets confused with
Most mis-hires in go-to-market are not bad candidates. They are the right candidate for a different job than the one the company actually needed.
GTM Strategist versus Head of Growth
A Head of Growth is judged on acquisition velocity through experiments and performance channels. A GTM Strategist is judged on whether the motion as a whole is pointed at the right accounts with the right message, and tunes how outbound, ABM and RevOps fit together. Growth runs the experiments. The strategist decides which experiments are worth running.
GTM Strategist versus VP of Marketing
A VP of Marketing runs the marketing function, including the team and the budget. A GTM Strategist usually has no large team and works across marketing, sales and RevOps on the design of the motion. At smaller companies one senior person does both, which is a signal to hire the VP and add the strategist later.
GTM Strategist versus GTM Engineer
The strategist decides which signals matter and what should happen when they fire. The engineer builds the system that detects them and acts. Hiring an engineer before the strategy is settled automates guesses at higher volume.

| Signals | Which buying signals do you trust in security, and which ones do you think are noise. |
| Alignment | Describe a time sales and marketing disagreed about the target account list. What did you do. |
| Evaluation | How would you judge whether our current stack supports the strategy. |

First 30 days
- Review closed won and closed lost data by segment
- Interview sales, marketing and customer success on who actually buys and why
- Document the current motions and where they overlap
By day 60

Questions
GTM Strategist hiring questions
What is a GTM strategist?
A GTM strategist owns the thinking that sits above execution: who the ideal customer is, how the company should position itself to them, which signals should trigger which plays, and how outbound, account based marketing and revenue operations fit together as one motion. The role is cross functional and usually has little or no direct team.
How is a GTM strategist different from a GTM engineer?
The strategist decides what should happen. The engineer builds the systems that make it happen. Many companies hire the engineer first because the work is concrete, then find the automation is aimed at an ICP nobody has settled.
When does a company need a GTM strategist?
Usually when several motions are running at once, such as outbound, account based campaigns and inbound, and no one owns how they fit together. That tends to happen between $5 million and $40 million in ARR. Earlier than that, the founder is the strategist.
What does a GTM strategist get paid?
Base salary runs $194,000 to $296,000 at Series B in the United States, with variable pay at about 15% of base, which puts on target earnings at $223,000 to $340,000. The title is new and the work overlaps with senior marketing and strategy roles, so compare with posted ranges on GTM Radar.
Can a VP of Marketing do this job?
At smaller companies, yes, and often should. The strategist title earns its place when the VP is running a team and a budget and nobody has the time to design how the motions fit together.
