Scope
What a GTM engineer actually owns
The question this role exists to answer: What workflow, automation or data pipeline needs to exist so reaching and closing can happen without a human doing each step.
Owns
- Enrichment pipelines and lead scoring logic
- Signal monitoring and real time routing
- AI drafted outbound and personalization systems
- Internal tooling that turns sales conversations into structured feedback
- Integration across disconnected GTM systems
Shares
Does not own
- Brand, category positioning and long arc narrative
- Carrying a quota or closing deals
- Customer facing technical pre sales
- Company level forecast accountability
Timing
When to hire a GTM engineer
Too early
Below roughly one million in ARR most companies do not have enough validated GTM motion to justify a dedicated hire. Automating a motion that does not exist yet just automates the wrong thing faster.
The right window
One million to five million in ARR, at the point where a working motion exists and the constraint shifts from what should we do to how do we do more of this without hiring linearly.
Outgrown
Past that the function typically formalizes into a dedicated hire reporting into RevOps or marketing, or a small internal team.
How much work this actually is
At Series B, with none of it covered today, the functions in this role's scope represent roughly 2.6 full time equivalents. The functions in scope represent roughly 3 people of work at this stage. That is a staffing plan question rather than a job description problem. Write the description for one person and plan the rest of the headcount, or reduce what this first hire is expected to cover alone.
| Function in scope | Group | Full time equivalents |
|---|---|---|
| GTM automation and data engineering Enrichment pipelines, signal monitoring, routing logic, AI drafted outbound, internal tooling. |
Systems and infrastructure | 0.85 |
| Marketing operations Marketing automation platform, campaign infrastructure, lead flow, attribution reporting. |
Systems and infrastructure | 0.85 |
| RevOps, CRM and forecasting CRM architecture, data hygiene, process definition, forecast models, board reporting. |

Compensation
What a GTM engineer costs
Structure matters as much as the number
Salary and equity weighted, structured closer to an engineering role than a sales role. Heavy variable pay on this role sends the wrong signal to the candidates worth hiring.
Equity: Paid on a salary and equity structure closer to a senior engineer than to a sales role. Published ranges span eighty five thousand to two hundred forty one thousand with a median around one hundred twenty seven thousand five hundred.
Bands are directional, for scoping a description or a target range rather than making or accepting an offer. Benchmark figures are triangulated from the sources listed and refreshed with the data file. Live posted ranges come from GTM Radar and are only shown once enough matched postings exist to be meaningful.
Title confusion
Titles a GTM engineer gets confused with
Most mis hires in go to market are not bad candidates. They are the right candidate for a different job than the one the company actually needed.
GTM Engineer versus Sales Engineer
Easy to conflate because both titles contain the word engineer and both work close to sales. A Sales Engineer is customer facing and deal specific. A GTM Engineer is internal facing and builds systems that operate across every deal at once, never in the room with a prospect.
GTM Engineer versus Head of Revenue Operations
RevOps sets the rules of the system. A GTM Engineer builds the machinery that runs inside those rules. RevOps is process and reporting integrity at the company level, GTM engineering is the specific automation that executes.
GTM Engineer versus Marketing Operations Manager
Marketing Ops usually stays inside marketing's own systems and administers existing platforms. GTM Engineering spans marketing, sales and customer success infrastructure together and skews toward building new automation.
GTM Engineer versus Business Development Representative
A GTM Engineer is not a salesperson who happens to code. The core skill set is closer to software engineering and data architecture than to quota carrying sales work, and the compensation structure reflects that: salary and equity closer to a senior engineer rather than heavy variable pay.
Requirements
What to actually require
Non negotiable
- SQL and Python or equivalent for data manipulation
- API integration across disconnected systems
- Workflow automation platform fluency
- Can explain a system they built and why it was designed that way
Genuinely optional
- Prompt engineering for AI driven workflows
- Data warehouse and reverse ETL experience
- Prior GTM or RevOps domain context
- Deliverability and email infrastructure experience
Everything in this column belongs under a preferred heading, or out of the description entirely. Requirements lists that mix these two columns filter out strong candidates who self select away.
Tools this role works in
- Data and enrichment
- Workflow orchestration
- Sales engagement and sequencing
- CRM
- Data warehouse and pipelines
- Intent and signal data
- AI and language model tooling
Name the specific platforms in the description. Platform experience is not fully transferable in operations and automation roles, and candidates screen themselves in or out on exactly this detail.

Interview questions that reveal fit
| Area | Question |
|---|---|
| System design | Walk me through a system you built end to end. What was the input, what did it produce, and what broke first. |
| Data judgment | How would you score a lead against our closed won history if you had our CRM and thirty days. |
| Architecture over tools | The tooling in this space changes every year. What have you built that would survive switching platforms. |
| Business judgment | Give me an example of automation you decided not to build. Why. |
| Maintenance reality | What breaks in these systems over time, and how do you catch it before someone else does. |
Measure the role on
- Manual hours removed from the GTM motion
- Speed from signal to first touch
- Data coverage and enrichment accuracy on target accounts
- Pipeline influenced by automated signals
- System uptime and drift caught before it reached a rep
First 90 days
First 30 days
- Map the current stack and where data breaks
- Shadow the manual work reps and marketers do daily
- Confirm the ICP definition every model will depend on
By day 60
- Ship the first automation that removes measurable manual hours
- Stand up signal monitoring for the highest value trigger
By day 90
- A working pipeline from signal to routed, enriched, drafted outreach
- Documented systems with monitoring so failures surface before a human notices
Questions
GTM Engineer hiring questions
What is a GTM engineer?
A GTM engineer builds the systems and infrastructure that let marketing and sales run at scale without adding headcount at the same rate. That means enrichment pipelines, lead scoring against closed won history, signal monitoring, routing logic, AI drafted outbound sequences, and internal tooling that turns sales conversations into structured feedback for product and messaging. The role is internal facing and closer to software engineering than to selling.
Is a GTM engineer just a salesperson who can code?
No, and hiring for that hybrid usually produces someone mediocre at both halves. The core skill set is closer to software engineering and data architecture: SQL and Python for data manipulation, API integration across disconnected systems, workflow automation platforms, and increasingly prompt engineering for AI driven workflows. It is a builder's job, not a closer's job.
When does a company need a GTM engineer?
Most commonly between one million and five million in ARR, once a working GTM motion exists and the constraint has shifted from what should we do to how do we do more of this without hiring linearly. Below one million in ARR there is usually not enough validated motion to automate, and automating a motion that does not exist yet just automates the wrong thing faster.
What does a GTM engineer get paid?
Published ranges span roughly eighty five thousand to two hundred forty one thousand depending on seniority and location, with a median around one hundred twenty seven thousand five hundred. The compensation structure matters as much as the number: this role is paid on salary and equity closer to a senior engineer rather than the heavy variable structure of a sales role.
Can a GTM engineer replace a marketing leader?
Rarely, and the attempt usually means mistaking systems for strategy. The role has no mandate over brand, category positioning or long term narrative. Where it does substitute for headcount is on the execution side, reducing the need for a large team doing manual list building, outreach or lead routing. That is a real substitution but only for execution capacity.

Turn this into a job description scoped to your company
The reference above describes the role in general. The builder takes your stage, your team, your existing coverage, your territory and your stack, and produces a description scoped to the gap you actually have, with a scope load check before you post it.
