Scope

What an account executive actually owns

The question this role exists to answer: Which opportunities in my territory are real, and what has to happen for each one to close this quarter.

Owns

  • An individual quota against a defined territory or segment
  • Discovery, evaluation management and negotiation
  • Deal strategy and multi threading into the account
  • Forecast accuracy on their own pipeline
  • A share of self sourced pipeline

Shares

  • Sales Engineer: Technical evaluation and proof of concept
  • Business Development Representative: Target account selection and outbound sequencing

Does not own

  • Pricing policy
  • Team management
  • Marketing programs
The does not own column is the one nobody writes down, and it is the one that prevents the mis hire. Put it in the description.

Timing

When to hire an account executive

Too early

Before founder led sales has closed a repeatable set of deals, an AE hire tends to fail because there is no motion to hand over.

The right window

Any stage past initial product market fit, in whatever quantity pipeline supports.

Outgrown

Never. This role scales in count and segments by deal size.

How much work this actually is

At Series B, with none of it covered today, the functions in this role's scope represent roughly 3.0 full time equivalents. The functions in scope represent roughly 3 people of work at this stage. That is a staffing plan question rather than a job description problem. Write the description for one person and plan the rest of the headcount, or reduce what this first hire is expected to cover alone.

Structure matters as much as the number

Roughly an even split between base salary and variable pay, which is standard for a role carrying direct revenue accountability.

Equity: Commonly 0.02 to 0.08 percent at Series B. On target earnings splits evenly between base and variable.

Bands are directional, for scoping a description or a target range rather than making or accepting an offer. Benchmark figures are triangulated from the sources listed and refreshed with the data file. Live posted ranges come from GTM Radar and are only shown once enough matched postings exist to be meaningful.

Title confusion

Titles an account executive gets confused with

Most mis hires in go to market are not bad candidates. They are the right candidate for a different job than the one the company actually needed.

Account Executive versus Business Development Representative

A BDR or SDR sets meetings and does not close. An AE closes. Companies that blur this in a job description usually end up with an AE spending most of their time prospecting and missing the number.

How to hire a business development representative

Requirements

What to actually require

Non negotiable

  • Attainment history in a comparable deal size and sales cycle
  • Sold to the same buyer persona
  • Can articulate a sales methodology and show they use it

Genuinely optional

  • Existing relationships in the territory
  • Security or technical buyer experience where relevant
  • Experience selling a category the buyer does not have budget for yet

Everything in this column belongs under a preferred heading, or out of the description entirely. Requirements lists that mix these two columns filter out strong candidates who self select away.

Tools this role works in

  • CRM
  • Sales engagement and sequencing
  • Conversation intelligence
  • Data and enrichment

Name the specific platforms in the description. Platform experience is not fully transferable in operations and automation roles, and candidates screen themselves in or out on exactly this detail.

Before you post

Red flags in an account executive job description

Quota stated with no pipeline coverage plan. If marketing and BDR support cannot cover three times quota, the number is a fiction.
The description mixes prospecting volume expectations with enterprise closing expectations. Choose one or staff both.
No territory or book of business written down. This is the single most common source of first year AE turnover.

Questions

Account Executive hiring questions

What is the difference between an account executive and an SDR?

An SDR or BDR generates and qualifies interest and sets meetings. An account executive runs the deal from discovery through negotiation and closes it. Blending the two in one job description usually produces an account executive who spends most of their time prospecting and misses the number.

What is a realistic account executive quota?

A common rule of thumb is four to six times on target earnings for the segment, with pipeline coverage of at least three times quota. A quota set without a credible plan for where that pipeline comes from is the leading cause of first year turnover in the role.
