Scope

What a Sales Development Manager actually owns

The question this role exists to answer: Is the team producing enough qualified pipeline, and is anyone on it getting better.

Owns

  • Hiring, onboarding and ramp for the development team
  • Coaching, call review and skill development
  • Team pipeline number and territory or queue assignment
  • Sequence quality, messaging and the tooling the team works in

Shares

  • VP of Sales: Pipeline targets and how development coverage maps to territories
  • Demand Generation Lead: Lead volume, quality and what the team is being handed
  • Sales Enablement Manager: Onboarding curriculum and ongoing training

Does not own

  • Closing and commercial negotiation
  • Campaign strategy and channel budget
  • Account executive management
The does not own column is the one nobody writes down, and it is the one that prevents the mis hire. Put it in the description.

Timing

When to hire a Sales Development Manager

Too early

Below three development reps the sales leader can manage this directly.

How much work this actually is

At Series B, with none of it covered today, the functions in this role’s scope represent roughly 2.6 full time equivalents. The functions in scope represent roughly 3 people of work at this stage. That is a staffing plan question rather than a job description problem. Write the description for one person and plan the rest of the headcount, or reduce what this first hire is expected to cover alone.

These bands are specific to cybersecurity go to market roles, not general B2B SaaS. Security pays above the cross industry midpoint: the buyer is technical, the cycle is longer, and the pool with real security context is small. Figures are directional, for scoping a description or a target range rather than making or accepting an offer. Live posted ranges come from GTM Radar and appear once enough matched postings exist to be meaningful.

Title confusion

Titles a Sales Development Manager gets confused with

Most mis hires in go to market are not bad candidates. They are the right candidate for a different job than the one the company actually needed.

Sales Development Manager versus VP of Sales

The VP owns closed revenue. This role owns the pipeline that feeds it. Companies frequently ask a VP of Sales to manage development reps directly, and coaching is the first thing that stops happening when a quarter is at risk.

How to hire a VP of Sales

Sales Development Manager versus Business Development Representative

This is a management scope, not a senior individual contributor one. Promoting the best BDR without changing the expectations produces a team of one person doing their own number well.

How to hire a Business Development Representative

Requirements

What to actually require

Non negotiable

  • Managed a team of development reps, not just been a senior one
  • Owned a team pipeline number
  • Built or run an onboarding and ramp program

Genuinely optional

  • Managed both inbound and outbound motions
  • Security category experience
  • Sales engagement platform administration

Everything in this column belongs under a preferred heading, or out of the description entirely. Requirements lists that mix these two columns filter out strong candidates who self select away.

Tools this role works in

  • CRM
  • Sales engagement and sequencing
  • Conversation intelligence
  • Data and enrichment
  • Analytics and BI

Name the specific platforms in the description. Platform experience is not fully transferable in operations and automation roles, and candidates screen themselves in or out on exactly this detail.

Before you post

Red flags in a Sales Development Manager job description

The description reads as a senior BDR with a management title. Decide whether this person carries their own number or the team’s.
No ramp expectation stated. Development reps take a quarter to become productive and a plan that assumes otherwise will fail.
Team size of one or two. That is a sales leader’s direct report problem, not a manager hire.

Questions

Sales Development Manager hiring questions

What does a sales development manager do?

They run the BDR and SDR team: hiring, onboarding, coaching, territory or queue assignment, and ownership of the pipeline the team produces. The distinguishing feature is that they carry the team’s number rather than their own.

Can a VP of Sales manage the development team directly?

Up to about three reps, yes. Beyond that coaching is the first thing that disappears when the quarter is at risk, and development reps are the population most sensitive to losing it. The cost shows up as ramp time and attrition rather than as a missed number, which makes it easy to miss.

Is this just a promoted BDR?

It should not be. Promoting the strongest rep without changing what is expected produces a team where one person hits their number and nobody else improves. The skill being hired is coaching and hiring, which is not the skill that made someone a good rep.

What should a sales development manager be measured on?

Team pipeline against target, the spread of attainment across the team rather than the average, ramp time to first qualified meeting, and retention. A team average can look healthy while most of it comes from one person.
