Scope
What a RevOps Engineer actually owns
The question this role exists to answer: Is the data in the CRM clean, connected and trusted enough that forecasting, routing and reporting can run without someone fixing it by hand every week.
Owns
- CRM architecture and the objects, fields and rules behind it
- Data pipelines between the CRM, marketing platforms, product data and the warehouse
- Inbound orchestration, from form fill to routed, enriched record
- Attribution models and the reporting built on them
- Revenue forecasting inputs and the models that use them
- Tech stack evaluations for anything that touches revenue data
Shares
Does not own
- Setting sales process, territory and compensation policy
- Brand, positioning and category narrative
- Carrying a quota or closing deals
- Writing outreach sequences or running campaigns
Timing
When to hire a RevOps Engineer
Too early
Below roughly $2 million in ARR the CRM is small enough that a careful founder or a part time consultant can keep it clean. A dedicated engineer at that point has more capacity than the data has complexity.
The right window
$3 million to $25 million in ARR, once three or more systems feed the revenue number and nobody fully trusts the dashboard.
Outgrown
Past roughly $50 million in ARR this becomes a small team with its own lead, usually inside RevOps or a central data function.
How much work this actually is
At Series B, with none of it covered today, the functions in this role’s scope represent roughly 2.6 full time equivalents. That is between 2 and 3 people of work at this stage, which makes it a staffing plan question rather than a job description problem. Write the description for one person and plan the rest of the headcount, or reduce what this first hire is expected to cover alone.
| Function in scope | Group | Full time equivalents |
|---|---|---|
| RevOps, CRM and forecasting CRM architecture, data hygiene, process definition, forecast models, board reporting. |
Systems and infrastructure | 0.85 |
| GTM automation and data engineering Enrichment pipelines, signal monitoring, routing logic, AI drafted outbound, internal tooling. |
Systems and infrastructure | 0.85 |
| Marketing operations Marketing automation platform, campaign infrastructure, lead flow, attribution reporting. |

Compensation
What a RevOps Engineer costs
Salary bands as of October 2026.
Structure matters as much as the number
Salary and equity weighted, structured closer to an engineering role than a sales role. Heavy variable pay on this role sends the wrong signal to the candidates worth hiring.
Equity: Salary and equity weighted, closer to a senior data or systems engineer than to a sales operations package.
These bands are specific to cybersecurity go-to-market roles, not general B2B SaaS. Security pays above the cross industry midpoint: the buyer is technical, the cycle is longer, and the pool with real security context is small. Figures are directional, for scoping a description or a target range rather than making or accepting an offer. Live posted ranges come from GTM Radar and appear once enough matched postings exist to be meaningful.
Title confusion
Titles a RevOps Engineer gets confused with
Most mis-hires in go-to-market are not bad candidates. They are the right candidate for a different job than the one the company actually needed.
RevOps Engineer versus Head of Revenue Operations
A head of RevOps owns process, policy and forecast integrity for the company and manages the people who run them. A RevOps Engineer builds the pipelines, models and automations that make those rules real in the data. Small companies hire the engineer first and the head of RevOps later. Larger ones need both, because the person who decides how a deal stage is defined should not also be the person debugging the sync that reports it.
RevOps Engineer versus GTM Engineer
Both write code and both sit close to the CRM. A RevOps Engineer works on the trusted data layer: schema, pipelines, attribution and forecasting inputs. A GTM Engineer works on the machinery that acts on that data: enrichment, signal monitoring and automated outreach. When the two are the same person, data quality usually loses to the next campaign.
RevOps Engineer versus Marketing Operations Manager
Marketing Ops administers the marketing automation platform and the campaign infrastructure around it. A RevOps Engineer works across marketing, sales and customer success data together, and builds custom pipelines and models instead of configuring a single platform.

Requirements
What to actually require
Non negotiable
- SQL and a scripting language such as Python or JavaScript
- Deep working knowledge of a major CRM data model and its API
- Built or repaired a pipeline that moved revenue data between systems
- Can explain an attribution or forecasting model and where it breaks
Genuinely optional
- Data warehouse and reverse ETL experience
- Workflow automation platform experience
- Experience validating and enriching contact data at volume
- Prior security or B2B SaaS revenue operations context
Everything in this column belongs under a preferred heading, or out of the description entirely. Requirements lists that mix these two columns filter out strong candidates who self select away.
Tools this role works in
- CRM
- Data warehouse and pipelines
- Workflow orchestration
- Data and enrichment
- Email verification and deliverability
- Forecasting and revenue intelligence
- Analytics and BI
- AI and language model tooling
Name the specific platforms in the description. Platform experience is not fully transferable in operations and automation roles, and candidates screen themselves in or out on exactly this detail.

Screening
Interview questions that reveal fit
| Area | Question |
|---|---|
| Data model | Describe a CRM data model you inherited that was wrong. What did you change first and what did you leave alone. |
| Pipelines | Walk me through a pipeline you built between two revenue systems. How did you find out when it broke. |
| Attribution | How would you explain our attribution to a skeptical CFO, including the parts you do not trust. |
| Forecasting | What inputs would you add to our forecast first, and which would you refuse to add. |
| Judgment | Tell me about a stack evaluation where you recommended doing nothing. |
Measure the role on
- Share of records that pass completeness and validity checks
- Time from form fill to a routed, enriched record
- Forecast accuracy against closed revenue at the start of each quarter
- Number of manual data fixes per week, trending down
- Pipeline failures caught by monitoring before a user reported them
First 90 days
First 30 days
- Audit the CRM schema, the integrations and the reports people actually open
- Find where the same number is calculated two different ways
- Agree the definitions the systems must enforce with RevOps and sales leadership
By day 60
- Fix the highest cost data break and put monitoring on it
- Stand up email and contact validation on inbound and imported records
By day 90
- One trusted pipeline from source system to dashboard, documented
- An attribution and forecasting input set the leadership team agrees to use
Questions
RevOps Engineer hiring questions
What is a RevOps engineer?
A RevOps engineer builds and maintains the data layer that marketing, sales and customer success all work from. That means CRM architecture, pipelines between revenue systems, inbound routing, attribution models and forecasting inputs, written as code and automation instead of manual admin work. The role grew out of revenue operations as teams found that the hard problems were data engineering problems.
How is a RevOps engineer different from a RevOps manager?
A RevOps manager sets the process, owns policy and forecast integrity, and works with leadership on how the revenue engine should run. A RevOps engineer builds the systems that enforce that process. Companies below about $10 million in ARR often hire the engineer first, because the constraint is trustworthy data, not process governance.
When does a company need a RevOps engineer?
Usually when three or more systems feed the revenue number and the team no longer trusts the dashboard, which tends to happen between $3 million and $25 million in ARR. If most of the pain is deciding how deals should be staged or how territories should be cut, that is a RevOps leadership problem, not an engineering one.
What does a RevOps engineer get paid?
Base salary runs $171,000 to $256,000 at Series B in the United States, with variable pay at about 10% of base, which puts on target earnings at $188,000 to $282,000. These are directional bands for a title that is new enough that benchmark data is thin, so check them against live posted ranges on GTM Radar.
Can a GTM engineer do this job?
Sometimes, but the two jobs pull in different directions. A GTM engineer is rewarded for shipping automation that creates pipeline. A RevOps engineer is rewarded for making the data underneath it correct. Giving both to one person usually means the data work gets the leftover time.
